You’ve done it! You have made it through the interview questions and can breathe a huge sign of relief. And then, the interviewer asks if you have any questions and your mind goes blank. The answer to this should always be yes, as this gives you the perfect opportunity to demonstrate enthusiasm and curiosity about the role that you are applying to and allows you to take control of the final part of the interview and leave a good impression. Whilst this can make you feel put on the spot a little, it doesn’t have to, and there is no reason why you can’t have thought of questions in advance and nail this just like the rest of your interview! We have created a list of strong interview questions that is a good starting point for any interview question prep…
Are there any opportunities for progression and training with the company?
To show that you’re serious about the career, asking about how the role might develop in the future and what additional training it may offer is a good way of showing that you are interested in staying with the company long-term. Also, this is valuable information and finding out this out early will help you evaluate whether this job is the right fit for you.
Could you tell me more about the team that I would be working with?
If you have applied for a role that is part of a team then it can be a good idea to ask about the type of people that you’ll be working with. You can ask about how many people are in the team, what their previous experience is and how long they have been working at the company. This identifies you as a collaborator who is eager and willing to get involved in the team dynamic which will definitely be a plus in the eyes of the interviewer.
Can you tell me about the day-to-day responsibilities of the role?
Most of the time, job descriptions can be quite vague or only cover a few key parts of a company’s expectations of a role, and they can miss out a lot of the finer details. This is a great opportunity to learn as much as you can about the role, as well as learning more about what the company would expect of you if you were to get the role.
What is the performance review process for this role?
This question is great for demonstrating your willingness to learn and develop within the role and also shows that you are planning ahead and are looking to stay with the hiring company in the long term. This also will provide you with some great additional information about the performance metrics of the role and what will be expected of you.
How long have you been with the company and what do you enjoy about your role?
This is a great set of questions that build a rapport with the interviewer and requires a personal response rather than just a generic reply that is given to all the other candidates. You can get an insider’s perspective of the company and learn about the more positive aspects of the role, and it can give you an indication of how the interviewer has progressed since starting at the company.
We hope that these questions are helpful, and you can add them to your list of growing interview skills. It is important to remember that interviews are not one sided and are about you getting to know more about the role and the company you have applied for just as much as the interviewer assessing your suitability for the role, so relax and use the time to ask questions as a great opportunity to learn more about your potential future role!
